Curbside Pickup

The library’s schedule for taking calls and arranging pickups:

Mondays    12:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Tuesdays    10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Wednesdays    10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Thursdays    12:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Fridays    10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Saturdays    10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

The recommended method for making requests is to use the online catalog to place holds on those items you are interested in borrowing (see directions). Please keep in mind that, due to the current suspension of statewide library delivery services, you may only place holds on items that are owned by the Springfield Free Public Library. When your item is available, someone from the library staff will call you to schedule a pickup.

You can also request the items you want by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling (973) 376-4930 during the hours the library is open. We will not respond to hold requests left on the library’s voicemail.

Please be aware that there is going to be increased demand for newer titles and recent best sellers. This may be a good time to think about checking out things that caught your eye a few years ago but that you never got around to.

You are limited to checking out 10 items per library card at one time, with 2 picture books being considered the equivalent of 1 item.

Also keep in mind that we are not permitting renewals of any items at this time. Late fines will continue to be waived for all items checked out, beginning July 1; however, once one or more items have become overdue, your account will be blocked until the overdue items have been returned. Your account must be up to date with no overdue items and with no outstanding fees for lost or damaged items or for any fines over $5.00 that were incurred prior to the library's closing on March 14, 2020, for the COVID-19 pandemic.

If emailing or calling in your request, include some additional titles as back up in case your first few choices are not currently available.


Here is what you will need to know about the actual pickup process:

Pickup will take place at the library’s side door, opposite the rescue squad building.

When you arrive for pickup at the designated time, call the library at (973) 376-4930 to let the staff know that you are here. Please be on time and do not arrive early to avoid creating a traffic jam.

Your items will be delivered to you in a clean plastic bag. You must keep your windows rolled up and pop open your trunk from the inside of your car; a staff member will place the bag inside your trunk. Do not, under any circumstances, get out of your car.

Staff members will not remove from your trunk or otherwise accept library items that you wish to return; you will be responsible for returning your items to one of the library’s two outdoor drops. Please do not return items to the book or AV drops in the plastic bags they were received in.

All returned items will be isolated for a minimum of 96 hours before they are checked back in and made available to the next patron.
