In our efforts to bring you the best library service possible, the library has joined the Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium (LMxAC). During the transition, we will be unable to accept any holds between May 15 and May 31. Please note that holds placed directly by patrons during that time will also be lost. We are sorry for this inconvenience and look forward to coming back better than ever on June 1.

We are pleased to announce that the firewall for the library's computer network will be undergoing a major upgrade on Wednesday, May 31. Unfortunately, this will require the shutting down of our Internet network for a period of approximately two hours, most likely to occur between 1:00 and 3:00 PM. It is possible that subsequent sporadic outages may occur up until about 5:00 PM that afternoon. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

From May 26th - 31st, as we transition into our new system, we will continue to be able to check out library materials but will not be able to perform any other functions, including item check in, processing of payments; updating existing library cards, registering new patrons, or looking up anyone’s account. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR LIBRARY CARD with you as we will need the barcode number on your card to be able to check anything out to you on these two dates.

Artist Application

1/5/17: The library is currently accepting applications for artists looking to exhibit their works during 2017.

The Donald B. Palmer Museum of the Springfield Free Public Library accepts applications from artists who wish to exhibit their work in the museum's gallery space.  Applicants are asked to submit a current resume, 10 slides, prints, a CD ROM or digital files representative of their work along with a stamped self-addressed envelope that will accommodate the return of their submitted samples.  Due to increased use of the space for programming, we regret that we are currently unable to accept applications for the exhibitions of sculpture unless the pieces can either be hung on the wall or displayed on wall-mounted shelves.  A limited amount of pedestal space is also available.  Applications are reviewed by the Museum Committee of the Library Board on a rolling basis.  Artists whose work has been accepted will be offered an exhibit period of approximately one month.

The 36x50 foot Palmer Museum was opened at its current site in 1975. The Palmer Collection was started in 1939 when the Library Board of Trustees appropriated $25.00 to Springfield resident Donald Palmer to purchase pictures of Springfield. The collection grew to include historical mementoes, antique guns, toys, tools, glass & china, etc. Portions of the permanent Palmer Collection are on display throughout the year.

Since 1992, the Museum has provided space for the exhibit of art and historical works and for the presentation of cultural programs. During these years, the Museum has exhibited the works of many fine local and regional artists. Exhibits featured have included photography, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, glass work, handmade paper and prints.
