Artist Application

Updated June 7, 2017

Palmer Museum of the Springfield Free Public Library accepts applications from artists who wish to exhibit their work in the museum's gallery space. The Donald B. Palmer Museum of the Springfield Free Public Library is currently accepting applications from artists who would like to exhibit their work in the museum during 2017 and 2018.

Applicants are asked to submit a current resume, 10 slides, prints, a CD ROM or digital files representative of their work along with a stamped self-addressed envelope that will accommodate the return of their submitted samples.  Due to increased use of the space for programming, we regret that we are currently unable to accept applications for the exhibitions of sculpture unless the pieces can either be hung on the wall or displayed on wall-mounted shelves. A limited amount of pedestal space is also available.  Applications are reviewed by the Museum Committee of the Library Board on a rolling basis. Artists whose work has been accepted will be offered an exhibit period of approximately one month.

The 36x50 foot Palmer Museum was opened at its current site in 1975. The Palmer Collection was started in 1939 when the Library Board of Trustees appropriated $25.00 to Springfield resident Donald Palmer to purchase pictures of Springfield. The collection grew to include historical mementoes, antique guns, toys, tools, glass & china, etc. Portions of the permanent Palmer Collection are on display throughout the year.

Since 1992, the Museum has provided space for the exhibit of art and historical works and for the presentation of cultural programs. During these years, the Museum has exhibited the works of many fine local and regional artists. Exhibits featured have included photography, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, glass work, handmade paper and prints.
