The library will screen Tanna (2015) at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. 104 minutes. Not rated.
Tanna was a 2017 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Film. It is an Australian-Ni-Vanuatu film set on the island of Tanna in the South Pacific. This remote island is covered in rain forest and dominated by an active volcano. A young girl breaks off an arranged marriage to run away with her lover, setting off a war that threatens their future. This is a true story based on the cultural history of the Yankel tribe. It is not “acted out” as much as “re-lived.” Most of the cast played their own roles in the film. In Nauvhal with English subtitles. Directed by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean. Starring Mungau Dain, Marie Wawa and Marceline Rofit.
Funding for the film program has been made possible in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs and by the Friends of the Springfield Free Public Library.
