The Springfield Free Public Library's (Really Good!) Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. to discuss The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy.
One of his Wessex novels, it was serialized from May 1886 to April 1887 in Macmillan’s Magazine. The work was Hardy’s eleventh novel, and said to be the author’s favorite. The story takes place in a small woodland village called Little Hintock, and concerns the efforts of an honest woodsman to marry his childhood sweetheart. The Woodlanders marks the beginnings of controversy for Hardy’s novels, but at this point in his career, he was established enough as a writer to take risks, often involving topics related to sex, marriage, divorce and marital fidelity.
