The library will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

The children’s room will be closed Thursday, January 23 and Friday, January 24 for the installation of new signs and decorative artwork. Programs for children and teens that have been scheduled for those dates will not be cancelled. Children below high school age who are not accompanied by a responsible adult cannot be accommodated in the adult services department during the two days. Parents should make other arrangements for children who are accustomed to coming to the library during after school hours.

Teen Poetry Contest Begins

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Teen Librarian is holding a poetry contest open to Springfield residents in grade 6-12.


  1. Individuals can only submit 1 poem each. No multiple submissions.
  2. No collaborative or co-authored works (i.e., 1 poem = 1 writer).
  3. All poetic forms accepted. Ex: haiku, free verse, acrostic, erasure, sestina, sonnet, etc.
  4. Poems cannot contain inappropriate language or content.
  5. Poems must be your own original work. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
  6. Poems should be submitted to Ms. Alice, the Teen Librarian, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in the form of a PDF file. No Word files, please.
  7. Submissions should include your full name, your contact information, the poetic form used, your current grade level, and school name.
  8. Submissions will be accepted from Monday, April 1 to Friday, April 26. Late submissions will not be accepted.
