The Springfield Free Public Library's (Really Good!) Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, April 4th at 7 p.m. to discuss Travels with My Aunt by Graham Greene.
The library is celebrating 50 years of service at our current location and this novel was popular in 1969. Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager who had been looking forward to a life occupied by dahlias, is dragged into crime and exotic travel by his wayward Aunt Augusta. They embark on a journey from suburban London to Brighton to Istanbul to South America. The novel explores the sorrows of war, a hilarious send-up of 1960s counter culture, and surprising revelations about Henry himself. Graham Greene described his most enjoyably straightforward comedy as ‘the only book I have written for the fun of it”.
